

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a technology that combines a power generator with a cooling system ; this comes with a handpiece which contains a xenon lamp and an optical guide which has a filter. This then projects an intense light. This technology is based on the principle of selective photothermolysis (photo = light, thermal = heat, lysis = destruction, selective = targeted). The radiating energy that results is a high intensity flash of light that covers a spectrum of wavelengths corresponding to visible light and near infrared (spectral range 420nm to 1200nm). Polychromatic light is absorbed by the chromophores (melanin, oxyhaemoglobin, porphyrin and water), pigments that absorb light reacting to the photothermal effect which causes either cell destruction or changes to the cell. Thanks to a water cooling system for the lamp, the infrared rays are absorbed, heat is not transmitted to the skin, only the chromophore is targeted and there is no risk of burns.
Intense pulsed light operates using pulses of light. Emitted in the form of a train of pulses, it allows a bright flash to be cut in to several pulses to distribute energy. The time between each pulse corresponds to the TRT (thermal relaxation time) and allows the skin to dissipate heat. Balancing the pulse evens the energy density from the first pulse through to the last. Another characteristic of pulses is a “square” or “simmer”, which achieves a level of energy that is immediately requested and keeps this energy constant.
Unlike lasers, intense pulsed light photons are incoherent; they do not follow a predetermined path, this results in an unfocused beam of light. With a polychromatic spectrum, pulsed light can target multiple chromophores through the use of different filtrations allowing the realisation of different treatments. The wavelength chosen will influence the depth of light penetration in the different layers of the skin allowing the pulsed light to target the desired chromophore.
